Add structure to your garden
You put so much work into gardening that it would be a shame not to add a garden structure as the finishing touch. Garden structures can be purely decorative or can serve a purpose, giving you a place to sit back and enjoy the beauty of your garden.
Most garden and outdoor structures are available pre-fabricated or as build-it-yourself kits. You can find anything from gazebos, a canopy, garden arbors, trellis, pergola and fences. The choice really depends on your skill with tools and your motivation; assembling a garden structure is no easy task. However, if you've got a knack for carpentry or a penchant for adventure, doing it on your own can save you money.
Choosing your Garden Structure
Space is one of the most common issues when it comes to choosing a garden structure. If you have a lot of space, a cabana, pergola or gazebo is a great choice.
Gazebos can be made from wood, steel or aluminum, and are built with a roof, half-walls (which allow you to see out) and a concrete or wood floor. Of all the outdoor structure options, it is the most like being indoors. On the other hand, a cabana (or a canopy) is more of an open-air structure, generally consisting of just a roof on poles with optional tie-back curtains as walls.
Finally, a pergola is a bit of both worlds – it is usually made of wood but has an open slatted roof set on columns, and no walls at all. All three of these options are large enough to house a full patio set.
If your space is small, you may not want a full seating area. A garden arbor (arbors are also available for patio decks) provides a covering for a simple bench or chair set. Most arbors are wood and have slatted walls and roofs that can be used to support plants or flowering vines, making them a perfect addition to your garden.
Other Outdoor Structures for your Garden
Aside from seating, your garden can benefit from other outdoor structures. Decorative fences not only look beautiful, they also help keep nosy animals out. For a bigger project, a garden shed is a handy place to keep your tools, so you always have them at the ready.
Smaller structures like plant boxes, raised beds or a trellis, which is a slatted structure used for climbing plants like beans and tomatoes, are easy projects that will help you enhance the beauty of your garden.
